Beginners & Policies

a1 Always follow the rules and be a responsible Couponer.  If you are new to couponing, or an old pro, read over this list and make sure you are following the rules:)

(1) NEVER make copies of coupons! Most printable websites will allow (2) prints per computer. Manufacturers set a limit on how many coupons can be printed globally. If they allow for 100,000 coupons to be printed & 105,000 coupons come back, that means 5,000 coupons will not be reimbursed to the stores they were used at. Each coupon printed has a unique number on it somewhere. If a copy is used the store will not get paid for the coupon. This is really no different from stealing. Maybe you can live with that………….BUT…..it will eventually catch up with you. How?? Coupons from printable websites are also printed with your “IP” address. The ip address from the computer they were printed from is all the way around the coupon and teeny tiny, under the date of the coupon. Just about every class I teach, somebody says, “oh no, I have copied coupons, I didn’t know it was wrong”. It okay…just don’t ever do it again! I would hate for our stores to stop taking internet printables!

(2) Always use coupons for the exact product they were intended. If a coupon says “Trix cereal 17.5 oz box”  this does not mean it is okay to use on a 12 oz box.  Or if a coupon says “Honey Nut Cheerios”  and we use it on “Cheerios Yellow box”, this is ALSO wrong.  Some store registers may not catch this, but we know it is wrong.

(3) Never use fraudulent coupons! If it sounds to good to be true…It probably is a fraudulent coupon!  Be cautious of coupons that are for a FREE item when no purchase is necessary.  Also, if a printable coupon is missing an expiration date there is a good chance it is fraudulent.  The Coupon Information Corporation does an excellent job keeping us informed about fraudulent coupons.  You can go HERE to see the list of fraudulent coupons.

(4) Don’t Double Dip!  Many times manufacturers will attach a PEELIE to a product.  If a product has a manufacturer PEELIE, it is NOT okay to use another manufacturer coupon with this product!  Even if the cashier does not catch it..  If you catch it, it is your responsibility to let them know you are using another coupon.  This is one of the “GOLDEN RULES” of couponing!  Just about every coupon you see will have the disclaimer.. Only ONE manufacturer coupon per product listed. Stores get audited from time to time and they must be able to prove that the sales match the coupons.  Meaning if they sent in 2000 coupons, they better have 2000 sales for the product.

(5) Don’t attempt to use Expire Coupons.  Most stores DO NOT knowingly accept expired coupons.  I know that a few Publix stores will accept expired coupons that expired within the same week.  However, this is NOT a policy.  Please ask before attempting to use an expired coupon.

It is so important that we use coupons responsibly!  Don’t take advantage of stores by attempting to bend or break the rules.  I promise, you will SAVE ton’s of money without using coupons fraudulently.  Always remember…”Just because it scans..It doesn’t make it right”

What exactly is Gang Cutting?

In short, it means cutting large amounts of coupons together.  The long version……

This issue of Gang Cutting came up MANY years ago when retailers were actually cutting multiple inserts and submitting them for products that were not actually bought by consumers.  We can surely understand why this would be an issue!  In 1977  manufacturers were having problems with stores gang-cutting coupons from unsold newspapers, then turning them in for reimbursement. It was so  bad that one company estimated that over 108 million coupons were redeemed fraudulently annually!

In a sting operation manufacturers targeted an area in New York where gang-cutting and fraudulent coupon redemption was suspected to be a huge issue.  They released a coupon for a “Fake” product called Breen Laundry Detergent.  This product did not exist, so NO coupons should have been redeemed or accepted.  The 25¢/1 Breen Laundry Detergent coupon was designed to catch stores that were gang-cutting inserts and submitting all of the coupons for redemption.  Over 117,000 coupons for the non-existent Breen detergent were submitted for redemption from those inserts!  This gave investigators information as to which stores were gang-cutting coupons.   That’s almost $30,000 of coupons redeemed for a product that did not even exist! ( You can read more about this at PROMOMAGAZINE.COM)

So in short, this really was not an issue for your everyday consumer in the beginning.  So what does this mean for us today?  Can I not stack my inserts and cut all of them out at once to save time?  Well honestly, I don’t have a definitive answer for you on that one..  I stack my inserts and cut them all out at one time.  (I usually only have 4 or 5 at a time)  Some websites will tell you no, you should not do this, some will tell you that it is okay.  I was intrigued by this, so I spoke to a manager at my favorite store.  I asked if they had problems with coupons not being reimbursed because of “gang-cutting”.  His answer was NO.  They had not been made aware of coupons not being reimbursed because of “gang-cutting”.  I then asked, “Would they be made aware of issues like this?”  He said definitely, they would be made aware of issues with coupons not reimbursed for any reason.  In the past few years, I have cut multiple inserts at one time over & over & used them at this particular store.  So, in my honest opinion, after my discussion with this manager, I believe as long as you do not cut loads of inserts or use tons of the same coupon in one shopping trip you should be okay.

I have gotten quite a few emails today about Walmart changing their coupon policy?!  Have they??  Well, not really!  The changes were made internally.  The change is simply this. “If a coupon does NOT scan, a cashier is not allowed to enter it manually.”  Also, they may no longer use the hand-held scanners to scan a coupon. (that part sounds silly to me, but nevertheless it is a new rule)  This will not even effect a lot of you, because you store already would not accept a coupon that would not scan.  If you look at the Walmart coupon policy, HERE, you will not see any changes.  The coupon policy has always stated this, some cashiers would just manually enter a coupon.

So NEVER fear…OVERAGE is still a go!  (as long as the coupon scans!)  This change was mainly made in an attempt to cut down on coupon fraud.  We will probably still have a few minor issues with legitimate coupons not scanning, but that is just part of it:(  Just make sure your printable coupons, print clearly!  This is probably the biggest problem, I see that may arise. Let me know if any of you have any issues when couponing with this policy.

Thanks to Freetail Therapy for the Photo!

I know we are ALL thrilled that the Dollar Tree has started accepting Manufacturer coupons!!  I had the opportunity to try this out yesterday and it worked out great!!  However, when couponing the Dollar Tree or any other store it is imperative that we use our coupons ethically!

A lot of website are posting the above REDPLUM.COM coupon and telling people to use it at the Dollar Tree on Disney Items, making them free.  The above coupon was NOT intended for Disney pencils, stickers or any other Disney product other than vitamins.

If we read the fine print of the above coupon you will see the following:

This coupon is to be redeemed by Nature Smart. Nature Smart is a Vitamin ONLY company.  Even though this coupon states it can be used on ANY, the retailer will NOT BE PAID if it is used on anything OTHER than vitamins.  Dollar Tree does not sell Disney or Marvel Vitamins, at least at any store I have visited!

Use but don’t ABUSE our couponing privileges!!
