One week without CABLE

a1
Well we made it!!! And guess what….NOBODY DIED!!! One week without CABLE!!!

Since the beginning of the year, I have been looking for more ways to save money.  I have a 16 year that really wants a car!  My car insurance has sky-rocketed since she turned 16!  I have a 15 year old that will be 16 in a few short months!  Once again…my car insurance will increase! AND….she will want a car!  YIKES!  We would also like to take a nice Vacation this summer!  My 16 year old graduates in December and OFF to college she will go.  So this summer will be our last chance to take a vacation while all the kids are still at home.

I started thinking of things we could cut to save money….Cell Phones….NO……Internet….UH DUH…NO….LOL!!  I turned the thermostat down, I turned the thermostat up…  And finally one day it hit me!  CABLE!!  Actually, we had Direct TV.  I personally very rarely watch TV.  I usually catch shows on the internet while I work.  The fam, however is a very different story!  I knew I had some convincing to do to get them on board!

I tried out HULU for FREE first!  I was excited to see that every one of the shows I watch and my kids watch are available on HULU.  They were happy to be able to watch shows on their on schedule.  We are busy with Color Guard, SoftBall, Blogging, Work, etc.  Now we can watch our favorite shows from our cell phones, our laptops and on our TV through our wii or xbox!  Try HULU for Free HERE.

Okay, so prime time was taken care of….but what about all of those movies we would be missing..  I had an app for that, LOL!!  Between Netflix and Amazon Prime we have that covered as well!!  Right now you can try either for FREE!!  Netflix is only $7.99 a month.  You can give it a test drive for free HERE.

Amazon Prime is SO much more than just FREE 2 day shipping on Amazon!!!    With Amazon Prime I am enjoying FREE Streaming of thousands of Movies!!  The same, if not more movies that are on Netflix!!  Amazon Prime is $79 a year.  It has to be paid upfront.  It is about $17 cheaper than Netflix.  And you get FREE 2 Day shipping on Amazon.  Give Amazon Prime a free trial HERE

In summary, one week without Cable has made my family realize, we can definitely live without it!!  And the money we will be saving is HUGE!  I will keep you updated as we go along!  Let me know if you cut the cable!!!

247086_TV episodes & movies instantly streaming from Netflix. Start your FREE trial!

Terrible Horrible Good

Taken straight from one of my favorite children’s books by Judith Viorst, I had a  Terrible Horrible No Good , Very Bad Day at Walmart on Sunday!! I preach in all of my coupon classes, that everybody will have a bad experience couponing. Even ME! I wanted to share my experience with you, so you will see that it happens to everybody! You can’t let it discourage you! You just dust off and give somebody else your money!!

Yesterday afternoon, me and my 2 older daughters headed out to Walmart to do some shopping and look for some clearance deals to pass along to you (will post that later). I spent about 2 hours shopping and scoping out deals. In my buggy, I had:
40 El Monterey Buritos
40 Buddig 2 oz Lunch Meats
9 Posie Wipes & Washes
5 Got2B Hair products
4 Yo Crunch 4ct Yogurt packs
8 Yo Crunch Singles
6 2 Liters (Dr Pepper 10 & Diet Sunkist)
4 Jimmy Dean Delight Bowls
2 IHop Breakfast
1 International Delight Iced Coffee
And Many other things

Everything I had in my buggy totaled about $240 (MUCH less after coupons). My problems started after the 40 El Monterey Coupons. They all scanned fine!  At Walmart after 40 coupons, a CSM has to override in order for the cash register to continue taking coupons. I knew when the cashier HAD NO CLUE about this that I was probably going to have problems!! I told her about having to call the CSM to override after 40 coupons. She called over the CSM…and guess what…..THE CSM DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS EITHER!! WOW!!

Really Walmart!! I understand that the cashiers do not always know the coupons rules & guide lines, but your CSM’s NEED to know these rules! The CSM actually tried to tell me that she could not take anymore coupons! What! My total was still at $198!!! I was holding at least $140 of that in coupons! I was NOT about to pay $198!! So she did her little override thing and started scanning coupons!

Terrible Horrible Good

She started with the Buddig coupons. Of course, she scans it and the register says “verify $1″ Now this happens EVERY time I coupon at Walmart, sometimes the cashier makes sure I have the item other times they just hit the enter button and the coupon comes off my total. In this case, the CSM says, that I must not have the correct item!! (Okay by this point, I am feeling the heat in my cheeks!) I pulled the bag with the 40 Buddig Lunch meats and said count them.. She proceeds to do so, LOL!!! She puts those coupons through….grudgingly!Terrible Horrible Good

Next up the Poise.. Once again, it asks for them to verify the coupon.. (all you got to do is hit enter, my friend) She says again.. You must not have the correct item!! WRONG! Then she continues to pull a Got2B hair product out of my bag & says see, this item is not on this coupon!! (I kid you not) Now, something really ugly comes to my brain to say at this point (yep, I am human, I have those thoughts too!) , however I just reach into the bags and pull out the Poise and say…but these are:) She puts those coupons to the side, not scanning them, and goes on to the next coupon.Terrible Horrible Good

Next up on the chopping block was the Yo Crunch 4pk. She scans the coupon…the deadly “verify coupon” pops up on the screen!! Oh Great, I think to myself, HERE WE GO AGAIN!! She looks at me and says, Did you get this item?? I honestly, wanted to say no, I am trying to pull one over on you, but instead, I pull out the Yo Crunch. I had 4 of them. ( Two Cookie dough and two Oreo) Keep in mind, she had only tried to scan one coupon.. Her excuse for the “verify coupon” coming up was because the coupon said “one coupon per item purchased”. First of all…that is the VERY first coupon she tried to scan!!! Secondly, I explained to her, I bought (4) items and I am using (4) coupons. (1 coupon per item purchased) So she next implies that because this coupon (good off ANY Yo Crunch 4pk) is ONLY good on the M&M ones, because that is what is pictured!  Never mind that blue box in the upper right hand corner that says 27 Varieties!! By this time, all I could do was laugh:)

My yogurt was warm…My IHops & Jimmy Dean were no longer frozen & my patience was GONE! I knew it was time for me to pack it up and go HOME!! I was not going to argue the validity of another coupon with this CSM! I told them thank you for wasting 2 and a half hours of my day and have fun putting everything back!

Today, my plan is to go back and speak the store manager, Willie.  I have known him for a while and want to show him my coupons and explain what happened to him.  I am not sure how often Walmart loses big sales like this because of uneducated cashiers & CSMs, but I am going to go out on a limb and say, it is probably more times than they would like!  Now, I know my $240 (more when you include the handling fee Walmart receives for each coupon used) order is not going to make or break a corporation like Walmart, but if it happens enough times, they will feel a pinch!

The moral of this story is this….Yes it was a Terrible Horrible No Good , Very Bad Day at Walmart !  But, I am in hopes that the CSM & Cashier, will learn a valuable lesson about coupons after it is all said and done.  And I will go on to coupon another day!  (Not at Walmart anytime soon, LOL)  When things like this happen…..Talk to the manager!  If one is not available,   leave it at the store!  Don’t get down & give up on couponing!  As long as you are following the rules,  hold your head up high and give a store that wants to take your money the business!  That is my plan:)

UPDATE: I went to Walmart to speak with Fast Willie.  He was in  a meeting with corporate.  An assistant manager came out to assist me.  I explained to her all of the above.  She understood my frustration.  She told me she would speak with the CSM’s and make sure they understood the policies and taking coupons.  I hope so…..

Do you ever wonder how people find all those great coupons and score awesome deals that you usually miss out on? I get asked nearly every time I go shopping, “Where do you find great coupons ?”.   I have a few tricks up my sleeve that I use to make sure I get the maximum savings on all my purchases.

(1) Get the biggest paper available:  Always remember coupons are regional.  If you buy a local paper, make sure it is the biggest paper available to your area.  I get emails regularly from readers wanting to know, “You posted X coupon in your matchups and I didn’t get it…Why Not??”  The reason is simple, smaller rural areas get fewer coupons.  Bigger cities get bigger, better coupons.  If you haven’t checked out ordering inserts,  try it one week and see if it is worth it for you.  My insert source for over two years can be found HERE.

(2) Make sure and use printable coupons:  If you do not already have one, it is absolutely worth the small investment to buy a printer!  Find great deals on printers at Best Buy, Walmart, & 1SaleADay.

A tip for buying a printer:  Price the cost of ink BEFORE you buy the printer.  It’s not worth it to get a GREAT deal on a printer, if the ink costs you an arm & a leg!  Check out great deals on Ink HERE or HERE.

Make sure you take advantage of recycling your ink cartridges to earn cash to spend at your favorite office stores like Staples or Office Max.  To find out more about ink cartridge recycling head over HERE.

Coupons reset on the 1st of every month!  This means we will see new coupons and refreshed coupons on the 1st.  Almost all printable coupons have limits both per computer and over all.  If it is a really good coupon, it will be gone first!!  Make sure and visit on the first of the month to score the best coupons!!  Look up to the top of this screen,  see CouponNetwork, SmartSource, REDPLUM, Coupons.com, CommonKindness and printable coupons??  Click on any of those to see the newest coupons!

(3) Purchase coupons from a clipping service:  Sometimes it is worth it to purchase individual coupons.  Do the Math!!  Make sure it is worth it!!  For example, if a coupon makes an item completely free, it is usually worth paying $1.50 for a 10 pack of this coupon!  My favorite sources for clipped coupons can be found HERE or HERE.  Just like everything else, the good ones go fast!  Shop early to grab the great ones!

(4) Search eBay for great coupons:  Even after my insert services have sold out, I can usually find them on eBay.  You can search eBay directly from The Q-Tipping Mom website:)  See the eBay search box on the right-hand side of your screen.  eBay is my last resort because it is usually a little more expensive.  You also have to watch out for fraudulent coupon sellers!!

Don’t let that scare you off!!  Just use common sense:)  If it sounds too good to be true, well….it probably is!  I will say that MOST Free item coupons on eBay are probably fraudulent!  I NEVER buy them!!  Watch for things like sellers who list a bunch of FREE coupon deals!  Watch for NO EXPIRATION coupons.  I just found one that had 20 FREE Full Size Arm & Hammer Laundry detergent coupons for sale in different auctions.  All of their past auctions are set to private.  This tells me that they are probably hiding something….probably more FREE Arm & Hammer;)  Sometimes a company will send people FREE product coupons, however, I find it highly unlikely a company sends one person 100′s of FREE product coupons!  Steer away from these deals on eBay!

When shopping on eBay it will be tempting to pay more that you should for those “HOT” coupons….just because you want to “WIN”.  Avoid getting caught up in the game of winning!  Remember you are only buying coupons if it is  ”WORTH” it!  Again, do the math ahead of time to figure out what is a reasonable amount to pay and still be saving money.

I use a sniper method to make sure I don’t get caught up in the game:) Have you ever lost an eBay auction, and could not figure out how in the world somebody out bid you with only 5 seconds left?  Well they are probably using a sniper service.  The sniper service I use can be found HERE.  I like them because they give you 3 FREE snipes a month!  (sometimes that is all I use)  Also, when you invite your friends to use their service you get an additional 3 snipes for each friend that signs up.

When using a sniper service,  simply set you amount at the max amount that you are will to pay for an item and forget about it.  They do the work for you in the last few seconds of the auction.  This will keep you on budget and you will be surprised by how many auctions you will win!

Hopefully, these tips will help you get the BEST coupons!  If you have any other tips, we would love to hear them!!!

a1 Always follow the rules and be a responsible Couponer.  If you are new to couponing, or an old pro, read over this list and make sure you are following the rules:)

(1) NEVER make copies of coupons! Most printable websites will allow (2) prints per computer. Manufacturers set a limit on how many coupons can be printed globally. If they allow for 100,000 coupons to be printed & 105,000 coupons come back, that means 5,000 coupons will not be reimbursed to the stores they were used at. Each coupon printed has a unique number on it somewhere. If a copy is used the store will not get paid for the coupon. This is really no different from stealing. Maybe you can live with that………….BUT…..it will eventually catch up with you. How?? Coupons from printable websites are also printed with your “IP” address. The ip address from the computer they were printed from is all the way around the coupon and teeny tiny, under the date of the coupon. Just about every class I teach, somebody says, “oh no, I have copied coupons, I didn’t know it was wrong”. It okay…just don’t ever do it again! I would hate for our stores to stop taking internet printables!

(2) Always use coupons for the exact product they were intended. If a coupon says “Trix cereal 17.5 oz box”  this does not mean it is okay to use on a 12 oz box.  Or if a coupon says “Honey Nut Cheerios”  and we use it on “Cheerios Yellow box”, this is ALSO wrong.  Some store registers may not catch this, but we know it is wrong.

(3) Never use fraudulent coupons! If it sounds to good to be true…It probably is a fraudulent coupon!  Be cautious of coupons that are for a FREE item when no purchase is necessary.  Also, if a printable coupon is missing an expiration date there is a good chance it is fraudulent.  The Coupon Information Corporation does an excellent job keeping us informed about fraudulent coupons.  You can go HERE to see the list of fraudulent coupons.

(4) Don’t Double Dip!  Many times manufacturers will attach a PEELIE to a product.  If a product has a manufacturer PEELIE, it is NOT okay to use another manufacturer coupon with this product!  Even if the cashier does not catch it..  If you catch it, it is your responsibility to let them know you are using another coupon.  This is one of the “GOLDEN RULES” of couponing!  Just about every coupon you see will have the disclaimer.. Only ONE manufacturer coupon per product listed. Stores get audited from time to time and they must be able to prove that the sales match the coupons.  Meaning if they sent in 2000 coupons, they better have 2000 sales for the product.

(5) Don’t attempt to use Expire Coupons.  Most stores DO NOT knowingly accept expired coupons.  I know that a few Publix stores will accept expired coupons that expired within the same week.  However, this is NOT a policy.  Please ask before attempting to use an expired coupon.

It is so important that we use coupons responsibly!  Don’t take advantage of stores by attempting to bend or break the rules.  I promise, you will SAVE ton’s of money without using coupons fraudulently.  Always remember…”Just because it scans..It doesn’t make it right”

If you have any questions about coupon usage, please feel free to email me:  theqtippingmom@gmail.com

What is Gang Cutting Coupons?

September 18, 2012

What exactly is Gang Cutting?
